Ankle Sprain

There are four types of ankle sprains. The most common usually occurs with a rocking of the ankle where the foot is turned inwards causing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stretch. Even through there is minor injury to the ligaments there will be pain and swelling. This type is usually treated at home with rest, ice, elevation and an ace wrap. The next most common ankle sprain occurs the same way and this type ruptures some of the ligaments. There is immediate swelling, pain and limited ability to walk. This type of injury should be treated with rest, ice, elevation, immobilization and a medical examination.
